Breakfast...the most important meal of the day

What can I say, skipping breakfast will ruin any good choices you make for the rest of the day.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it is what kick starts your metabolism.  I have read a lot of articles and done quite a bit of research and here are some of the great pieces of information I have come across.

One great tip is to do cardio before you have breakfast.  The reason for this is because your body is more likely to burn more fat running on an empty stomach.  What happens is your body has used up all of the glycogen stores from fasting while you sleep thereby attacking the fat stores instead.  Now do you think its worth getting up a little earlier for that cardio workout?!

Another trick is to have a cup of coffee even before you do your early morning cardio workout.  As you probably know, caffeine is found in just about any fat burning supplement you can purchase so...it makes sense that having caffeine before your cardio workout will also help you burn more fat.  The one draw back is the coffee really needs to be black because if you add cream or sugar (even fat free cream or a sugar substitute) those calories will cut back on the fat burning effect.  It is also always an option to simply take a 200-300 mg caffeine supplement if you cant stomach the black coffee; it has the same effect.

Interval cardio will also burn more fat than simply running at a steady pace.  Try doing 20-25 minutes of slow/moderate intervals to start; for example run for a minute then walk for a minute.

Ok, now you have done your interval cardio workout and had a cup of coffee...its time to eat!  The best choice you can make is to try to have some whole eggs for breakfast.  You may be surprised to know it is ok to eat some egg yolk even though we are taught that is the "bad" part of the egg.  The yolk provides healthy fats which will actually enhance muscle growth and promote fat loss.  Try having a whole egg or two along with 2-3 egg whites.  You should also have a piece of whole wheat toast with your eggs to provide your body with slow burning carbs.  These carbs will help keep your insulin levels steady and again, help your body burn fat.

Last breakfast tip, have a half a piece of grapefruit with breakfast.  Grapefruits (white or pink) help reduce insulin levels and obviously provide vitamin C which many studies believe also aids in fat loss.

That's it for today, have a great weekend and please check back for more tips next week!
